Gmail's dumb: Just host your own mail server!

Derek Kong , Miami, FL – Support ? What support! It does not exist. Wait time 30 minuter. – This hosting company is a subsidiary of BlueHost and I wonder if their service is as bad as #Justhost?

I set up a mail server from scratch. Use Thunderbird, mutt or any other mail client to log in securely, just requires a domain name and a VPS/server. I use this script to help me:

Not only will it automatically set up a Postfix and Dovecot server, but also Spamassassin and use OpenDKIM and SPF to validate and secure your mail domain to ensure that you can send messages to Gmail and other big addresses.

My registrar as used here is Epik: They are based.
My VPS is with Vultr: that affiliate link will give you a $100 credit to test the waters for the first month. A VPS after that can be about $3.50 a month.

By the way, once you do all this, you can also get a command-line based mail system with my mutt-wizard:

DONATE: 💰😎👌💯
OR affiliate links to things l use: Get a cheap and reliable domain name with Epik. Get a VPS and host a website or server for anything else. Get the Brave browser.$/invite/@Luke View my videos on LBRY. Get crypto-rich on Coinbase.

The last time I done this 15 years ago, it was taken over constantly and used to spam people. But maybe things have gotten better in the last 15years. But I heard postfix, dovecot and I dont know.
Maybe I will try again, maybe I wont.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: Don't forget to edit your nginx error pages (Like 404) to not show what version of the web server you are using. This can keep script kiddies from compromising (hacking) you in the future. Years ago a friend of mine learned that the hard way.

Next stop, setting up your own DNS/name server so no one gets to see your DNS requests. DNS servers can identify you and look at bits like your MAC address by using extensions for DNS (EDNS0).

Even though your connection to smtp or imap servers may be encrypted with tls (or starttls), your actual mail is not by default, so all mail servers that receive and relay your emails can see your whole message (with a possibility to store it and sell your personal information to third parties for targeted advertising). I'd suggest considering encrypting your email messages with PGP.

I feel so embarrassed when someone recognizes my proton mail emails and tells me how cool it is that I'm so security centric.

Ooo, I'm relying on Swiss law to keep my emails from being looked at. I'm so "security minded".

personally I say you should just do something like protonmail cause if you are hosting on a vps you still have to trust the provider

I use mail-in-a-box, auto installs, includes Roundcube (web client), auto configures the server and firewall..etc.
It's actively maintained. I have it on a cheap Hetzner vps. Works great for what I need. It also gives you a JSON api for easy user / alias creation.

Indeed! – Been running my own email servers for years – My current setup is FreeBSD hosted, but works just as well under Linux: OpenSMTPd, Dovecot and rSpamdD (With redis for cache) and it works like a charm and OpenSMTPd's config is sooo easy – My full "unlimited domains, unlimited users" config file is literally 20 lines.
