WordPress multisite is the same software that WordPress.com is built on. It allows you to create as many different WordPress sites as you want from a single database.

Some fun facts:

– WordPress.com hosts 37+ million sites using the WordPress multisite setup, which means they all run on one database.
– A regular WordPress site has 11 tables in the database. The first site in WordPress multisite network will also have 11 tables. Every site after that will add 9 tables to the same database which contains the data for the new site. So if you have 37+ million sites in your network you’ll have 333 million tables in your database.

Here are the steps to configure a WordPress multisite install.

1. Make sure you have a domain in your hosting account. Either a root domain or an add-on domain. If you need help with Add-on domains watch this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4u7SUPB8ks

2. Download the WordPress files from WordPress.org and then upload them to the folder of your domain in your hosting account.

3. Create a MySQL database as you normally would.

4. Install WordPress as you normally would as well.

5. Add the below line of code to the wp-config.php file after WordPress has been installed:

define( ‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true );

Paste that code right above the line that says:

/* That’s all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */

Then save wp-config.php file.

6. Log out of and back into your WordPress site.

Go to Tools, then Network Setup. You’ll be instructed to add some more code to your wp-config.php and some to your .htaccess file.

After you’ve done that, you’ll be asked to log in again.

When you’re logged back in your Multisite network is created.

Managing your WordPress multisite network will require:

– Creating and managing sites
– Installing and activating themes
– Installing and deactivating plugins
– Installing updates

Hello, I am new to wordpress, my plan is to set up five sites, all with different purpose (some for e-commerce, some for reviews and etc) having in mind that there will not be more than five sites, is it easier just to do multiple installation of wordpress? Could you point me out to some tutorial on this subject?

    Hi There,
By the way you are one of the best on all youtube channels! Great job!
I have a quick question please. I have a dedicated hosting plan with godaddy.com and I want to install the WP multisite on the subdomain (not primary domain). In fact, I followed your instruction including the mapping (but cannot see under my tools the Domain mapping).
    Thanks in advance

Great only could install subdomain (option) since my site was already setup. But I wanted that anyway. One thing about the wpmudev – plugins yes they are great however they business model is to tie you into a membership and their plugins will start conflicting with more lightweight but free options

Question: I set up my multisite as in your video. And it looks like it worked, however, there is nothing in my subdomains. I mean no site or anything just a title. Is it possible that the code needed to be installed in the root folder fils and not in the public folder files?

Thanks for posting this video. I was able to install Multisite but the created subdomains don't work. I installed WordPress via an installer. Then I followed your steps after basic WP installed successfully. Adding Multisite seems to work. I am able to create a subdomain. However, the subdomain does not work. Should Multisites create a subdomain in the cPanel? It did not for me.

Ok, great videos. I am finding everything you are doing very helpful. I am not 100% where to take it from here though. I need to sell tickets and other products from an events calendar and each individual client has to have their own admin access without messing up my own admin area and them being able to see everyone elses ticketed events. Maybe there's a tutorial on something along this line? Thank you.

It's always the same… all guides finished here… BUT when you try to enter dashboard you will get nothing… just an 404 page Not Found

The requested URL /wp-admin/ was not found on this server. , so should I install worldpress again into the subdirectory? or what? because after that plugins not work for the "subdomain" website… and i dont understand why… and themes.. and you cant duplicate anything.. it all looks like that one important point is missing… but i cant find out which one…

Can you recommend a hosting provider which not only allows a multisite install but also allows the installation of a wildcard SSL certificate, which would secure the domain and all subdomains?

So I recently got Bluehost WordPress shared hosting. I created a subdomain in the Bluehost Portal, then I uploaded WordPress directly onto the subdomain. Is that the same thing?

Or can I somehow do what you've just done, on a pre-installed WordPress hosting, from Bluehost?

If a person already has html websites and ONLY wants to add a wordpress Blog page named "Blog" to various sites which will be controlled by 1 WordPress account… Any idea how this would be done?
